Raspberry Pi Cross-Platform NAS

Hi everyone,

 

I've become kind of bored with my Raspberry Pi lately and I've wanted to create a NAS with it. A cross platform NAS to be exact. I need it to support both Windows and Macs as well as Android. The main issue I've been having is how to format the drive, and how to configure the Pi to share the drive. I've got ethernet access, and a drive, and I just need a little help getting started.

What kind of Ethernet network do you have? If it's Gigabit, then using the Raspberry Pi to create a NAS is not worth it as the Pi 1. only supports USB 2.0 and 2. only supports 100 Mbps Ethernet. That will slow the storage to a crawl. Gigabit is still slower than HDDs, but it's at least 10x the bandwidth the Pi can support.
