So, about 8 months ago I got two new 4GB RAM sticks, for a total of 8 GB. Everything has worked perfectly until a couple of days ago. BIOS and Task Manager still recognizes and says I have 8 GB of RAM, but it says that 4GB of it is always in use. This is what the Task Manager tells me: http://puu.sh/gQuuw/699c90e3c1.png

Task manager and BIOS says 8GB is recognized, but using some Life is Strange hardware detection thing it only detects 4GB, as you can see here: http://puu.sh/gQuDF/35198c31a2.jpg

This is what it says in RamMap: http://puu.sh/gQuVe/f9cd05ddfb.png

Is this a common sign of a faulty RAM stick, or could this be caused by something like a virus?

My computer is choppy as hell now, and it's incredibly annoying, so I'd be very grateful for any help!

Thanks.

often software such as games detects capacity per stick rather than total so there is that...

but you shouldn't have 4gb's in use so something is wrong there.  Could be a virus or a memory leak from a program there. (I'd look into this before hardware failure, if possible test the sticks in another pc.)

What operating system and bit version?

I have 64 bit Windows 7 Ultimate, so there shouldn't be a problem with windows not being able to handle 8 GB. Especially not since it's worked perfect in the past.

I can't test the stick in another PC, unfortunately. If it's a virus or a memory leak, it's something that doesn't show up in the Processes tab, because the memory usage doesn't really add up.

Take out both sticks and stick one in. See if it boots and works. Then replace with the other stick and retry. If both work try in different DIMM slots to see if one slot died. If everything still works hit them with a memtest.

If still nothing try malware bytes or bit defender for the malware side.

if you think it's a virus run a scan. ignore the lifeIsStrange results. games suck at detection.

honestly, i don't see a problem. i'm idling at nearly 7GB of RAM right now. i've simply got a lot of startup and background programs. (don't worry, i have an SSD)

4GB of usage is becoming typical now. if you are worried, test your sticks, and upgrade to 16GBs

We can't Benchmark like we used to, but we have our ways. One trick is to shove more GPUs in your computer. Like the time I needed to NV-Link, because I needed a higher HeavenBench score, so I did an SLI, which is what they called NV-Link back in the day. So, I decided to put two GPUs in my computer, which was the style at the time. Now, to add another GPU to your computer, costs a new PSU. Now in those days PSUs said OCZ on them, "Gimme 750W OCZs for an SLI" you'd say. Now where were we? Oh yeah, the important thing was that I had two GPUs in my rig, which was the style at the time! They didn't have RGB PSUs at the time, because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big green ones.

The thing is, I don't have many startup and background programs. At least not that I know of. It's basically just Steam and Skype that's open.
