kinda confusing

so i guess you bought the FX6300 CPU and mobo?

or you already have the mobo in hand?

with a 500+ budget

i say upgrade to the i3 if you can return the FX6300

also you need a H81,H87 or H97 board

H61 boards will not accept the Haswell CPUs

Whatever upgrade you get definitely do replace your PSU with a proper branded one. A faulty PSU can mess up  a lot of things.

My Build:

Spoiler

CPU: i7 4770k GPU: GTX 780 Direct CUII Motherboard: Asus Maximus VI Hero SSD: 840 EVO 250GB HDD: 2xSeagate 2 TB PSU: EVGA Supernova G2 650W

snip!

okay...where to start.

So let's be clear: you'll never be able to turn that into an high-end gaming rig...but a good mid-range machine, sure.

So what i suggest is to just get the hyper 212 to allow some SLIGHT overclocking of the FX-6300...and keep your motherboard, it's a VERY POOR motherboard, so NO VOLTAGE INCREASES on that motherboard...just try to kick the multiplier a bit and see how far it goes without crashing anf WITHOUTH INCREASING VOLTAGES.

You'll also want 8GB of RAM total for gaming, so put money toward adding another 4GB of RAM.

With the rest get a new GPU, R9 280X or GTX 960 are IMHO the top picks...the GTX 960 is very likely to run better with the FX processor, it's a well known fact that when paired with weaker CPU the nvidia drivers are easier for the CPU therefore nvidia GPU's in such conditions tends to give better results, i'd go with that.

Psu is of course very important so get yourself a good quality 550W units that has good reviews.

Good luck...

TLDR:

Order:

4 more GB of RAM

hyper 212 EVO

new PSU

GTX 960 or R9 280X

Motherboard if you can afford a better one AFTER those upgrades.

| CPU: Core i7-8700K @ 4.89ghz - 1.21v  Motherboard: Asus ROG STRIX Z370-E GAMING  CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i V2 |
| GPU: MSI RTX 3080Ti Ventus 3X OC  RAM: 32GB T-Force Delta RGB 3066mhz |
| Displays: Acer Predator XB270HU 1440p Gsync 144hz IPS Gaming monitor | Oculus Quest 3 VR

gonna change the mobo from 78lmt rev5 to asus a97 as i mentioned and thats only in fx 6300 plans

and noway returning to i3 which is worst in my case, (lossing money because i cant return the fx and also less performance for the future than oc'ed fx 6300)

and about the mobo.. ye sorry i meant something else but in the same range

correction on the i3 part

while the CPU is locked to the speed

it still performs better than the FX6300

this is a fact

also with the H97 board

you can upgrade to the later Broadwell i5 or i7 CPUs

those will net huge returns

AM3+ platform is no longer viable in today's computing

here, made some shopping for you, that's what i would order personnaly to turn your machine into a good gaming rig (please note the RAM is a PLACE HOLDER in the list, make sure you get RAM that is compatible with what you have right now..idealy you want same speed/latency/voltages sticks)

This motherboard is an 8+2 power phase board so you can go balls out on overclocking on this...and the HYPER 212 PLUS is what i used to have in my system on a FX-8320 and i was able to run 4.6ghz for gaming, no overheating.

?! what games do you play on this then?

MANY games nowadays REQUIRE you to have at least 6GB installed to even launch you know?!

mmo games like blade and soul , and fps games like ghost recon phantoms, BF4

in MMO's the CPU will be the limiting factor.

just get a GTX 960 and call it a day then...and a good PSU...CPU cooler if you want to have your rig quieter.

ye costs 116$ .. so whats next?

nothing, those are your cheapest options to overclock the FX-6300

ASUS M5A97 EVO but i doubt this would be cheaper?

well actually about the amd upgrade path.. well it isn't a problem to get psu, cpu cooler and mobo, but im little abit confused about the gpu and if its gonna be bottlenecked even with the oc fx6300, or i just have to switch to intel without cooler and with a low-end mobo since it wont even matter at all ?

if you have ABSOLUTELY no intentions to go with GPU's any stronger than GTX 960 or R9 280/285 the FX-6300 should do fine in most modern games...but the thing is if you play a lot of mmo's such a planetside 2, guild wars 2 and stuff like that...those are highly cpu intensive single-threaded games and the FX will greatly limit your framerates (30FPS and lower is to be expected) so for such games you'd be a lot better with say a core i3-4130 and a cheap H series board for example.
