As Star Citizen matures and exits pre-alpha, will the hardware requirement drop?

Do you think my HD 7870 Ghz edition can handle maxed settings at 1080p when the game launches? (I also have an i7 3770)

Max Settings? Most likely not, if you're looking for +60 frames. If frames don't bother you, it might be playable at max settings, but you'd probably have to settle for medium-high settings.

My expectation is that the lower end of the settings might remain about the same, maybe get a bit easier to run (maybe not) but the high end will likely get harder to run, while we will see more optimisation there is a lot yet to be added to the game, things like 50-100 simultaneous players, larger (64bit) zones, the addition of droves of NPCs planet side (or in large ships) when the hangar alone already stresses machines and rendering additions like AA etc. This is likely to bring high end machines at release (1 1/2+ years from now) to their knees.

Like Fett said I wouldn't expect to be running max settings on a 7870GHz... and I think that's fair being it'll be a 4 1/2+ year old card when SC releases ;)

The release date id so far away that it's not time to think about hardware yet. It's ultra tempting to grab a card that can run SC now but it's going to be an old card when the game launches. I'm biting my teeth and wait for the release. Then I buy everything it takes to max this baby up!
