Transfer OS to another HDD

dialgarocksful

How to transfer OS to another HDD without using a third-party app? I will be buying a 1TB HDD before Win10 gets released. I got a licensed 8.1 in my 2.5" HDD (former laptop drive), and I want to start fresh.

You can but the microsoft solutions might be a little complicated, clonezilla is a good option.

Yes

But would it detect that I upgraded from a licensed 8.1 to a clean-HDD licensed 10?

In previous versions you had the options to do a custom installation (fresh installation) or upgrade, now that the upgrade from 8 to 10 will be free it might be different. If you want to be 100% sure you should clone your old drive to your new one with something like clonezilla (you put it on a thumbdrive, boot from it and then clone one disk to another. This has to be done outside of Windows because your drive can't be in use while you clone).

cloning it would make the new HDD OS legit?

Yes, you'd only run into legitimacy problems if you upgraded motherboard/cpu.
