AMD FX-8350 things

Go to solution Solved by MegaATVLover,

I apreciate the lightning fast responses! However, i've decided that i'd rather have the Intel i5 4690k (i'll just overclock slightly)...

Thanks anyway, guys!

Hello,

I have 2 questions.

1) i have searched the internet for what RAM speeds the FX-8350 can support and have gotten semi-mixed answers. The most common is 1866. Is this correct?

2) What is a good "cheap" motherboard for gaming/recording/editing/rendeering with the 8350? I currently have selected the MSI 970 Gaming Mobo, as it's about $85 on Amazon (in the US). Does anyone have a better mobo suggestion for around the same price?

Thanks in advance!

Get any 990 FX board to make the best of what the 8350 can offer. All I can really suggest.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

1) 2000, 1866, 1600, whichever is cheaper. There is no harm in buying faster memory, you won't run into memory too fast to run. If you populate all 4 slots you might have to give NB a slight voltage bump.

2) 970 UD3P or 990FXAUD3 or the Asus 990FX board.

If you want to persist on using an FX 8350, buy a 990FX motherboard and a decent aftermarket cooler as you will need to overclock the crap out of the FX 8350 to get a semblance of smooth gameplay. Which is why I think you should go with an i5 4690K. Stating your total budget will go a long way to helping you buy the best components you can afford.

NP, as things stand with AMD CPU's, they just aren't the value they once were at launch in 2011-2012.

So, if that's the case, then why would one, buy one?

For a budget video editing/rendering rig, that's pretty much it. AMD actually managed to go backwards with their FX CPU's, especially considering FX 4*** CPU's get flogged by the Phenom II x4 they replaced.

Some fanboys, some like overclocking, some multitasking and editing on a budget.

For me, I would never go past a Pentium 4 for overclocking, they have a long pipeline like an FX CPU, and from 2001/2002 until the FX CPU's, they held the world record for the highest overclock. (Also, mine never seemed to say die-even when I tried to kill them).

Ok, so, then my question is... What is the good, "cheap" mobo for the i5 4690K? the one that i currently have selected is the ASRock Z97 Anniversary (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MN6RVY2/ref=dra_a_rv_lr_hn_it_P1400_1000?tag=dradisplay-20&ascsubtag=7922bf4eee2e1fd8a5e02598baa96de6_S)anybody got a better suggestion?

It seems good, though it probably won't overclock the 4690k much higher than my H87M pro would, having only a 4 phase VRM.

If the CPU's that came after were better for OC'ing, then why stop OCing at the Pentium 4?

Because it was only the FX series CPU's that are better at overclocking, and just like a Pentium 4, to achieve high overclocks you need a very good liquid cooler as a minimum, with dry iced and liquid nitrogen being preferred. Plus having a single core they don't get quite as hot (FX CPUs act a bit odd when you start disabling its 'cores')

Multitasking many single-threaded applications is still better on a better single-threaded CPU. An i3 will outperform an FX-8320 in running many light applications simultaneously. AMD CPUs currently don't have much of a place outside of productivity on a budget. You can't beat AMD's parallel computing performance per dollar.
