Drives and RAID Supported

Go to solution Solved by Eric1024,

FlexRAID is a very cool form of software raid. It wouldn't let you do raid 10, but if you're just using it for media storage it will be more than fast enough, and more importantly it will allow you to run raid without worrying about what controller your drives are connected to. And @looney is LTT forum's resident flexRAID guru.

Edit: I should ask. do you already have all these drives and you're looking to migrate them? Or are you just planning a build. because if you're just planning a build then using 8x1TB drives instead of 2TB or 4TB drives is silly :P

I have changed my minds and I am going to go for the Maximus 6 Extreme (If there are other boards that have 10 or more SATA 3 ports, PLEASE list them!) instead of the Rampage 4 Extreme because of the 10 SATA 3 ports. I also added more HDD's, because I plan to import ALL the movies from my other computers to my Maximus 6 Extreme (Or other motherboards) when I get it. My current setup is eight 1TB drives in RAID 10, and 2 SSD'd in RAID 0. On the Newegg site it says that there are 6 SATA 3 ports supplied by the Z87 chipset, and 4 from Asmedia. Someone on the forum says that you can RAID drives as long as they are from the same chipset, but the most ports from one chipset are 6 ports. I will be RAID 10 eight HDD's... Is there a way to do this without getting a RAID Card?

EDIT: Should I just get 4 2TB drives?

This may or may not be a good idea, it really depends on if you'd benefit from an LGA2011 CPU enough, etc.

Please explain it further? Im really lost now.

The X79 platform is more powerful than the Z87 platform in many ways such as CPU performance, RAM performance and capacity, etc.

True, but the most regarded X79 motherboard only has 8 SATA ports. But I *could* go with 4 2TB drives... I might go that route.

I think that might be better, the biggest problem would probably be value.

Performance/Dollar? Or if I would actually use the full potential of the X79 chipset?

Yeah, using 8 1TB drives is kinda crazy. xD
