I currently have this motherboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157501&cm_re=ATX_Motherboard-_-13-157-501-_-Product

I'm wondering if I should go with an i5 or an i7. I have a GTX 970 windforce also. This computer will be used mostly for gaming so what's the better choice?

If you're only gaming an i5 will be sufficient.

4690K.

If you're not editing, or doing content creation don't bother with the I7.

Why would you recommend a locked i5, on a Z97 board? 4690K and nice CPU cooler all the way.

Purely on performance, if this was 2013 when almost no games used more than 4 threads, unquestionably i5. Since it's 2015 and new games mostly use 6+ threads (and usually 8), i7 if you're willing to pay the $100 difference. But an i5 will still be awesome with a GTX 970, and is definitely better bang for your buck without sacrificing much (unlike an i3 which would be a big step down from an i5).

Yeah it's a hell of an upgrade from my Micro-ATX MoBo with an i5-3330, and a GeForce GT 640
