First time Windows 8.1 user with some questions/issues

Obysk

I recently built a new gaming PC and I'm using Windows 8.1 x64 for the first time. I have previous experience with Windows 7 and I have some questions about the new OS I'm using. It would be awesome if anybody could answer any or all of my questions.

  1. Is there a way to run the apps (mail, calculator, etc.) in a window and not full screen?
  2. I've setup "mail" and my hotmail account is working normally, but I have added my Shaw and iCloud accounts as per their instructions but I can't seem to receive any email to them, only send email from them?
  3. Is there a way to bypass the "login" screen and boot directly to the desktop?

So far this is about all I can't seem to figure out. My initial impression of Windows 8.1 is that I kinda' miss Windows 7. The whole start menu thing is throwing me off.

Thanks for any help with these issues!

1. https://www.stardock.com/products/modernmix/should do it, albeit being third party.

2. I don't use the Mail app, sorry.

3. http://pcsupport.about.com/od/windows-8/fl/auto-logon-windows-8.htm+ Classic Start should be able to boot you straight to desktop.
