i have a MSI z77a-G45 motherboard and i was wondering if the OC genie is safe? i guess you could say. ive heard around that its not that smart to use an onboard overclocker. but is it more unstable that way??

the component im using are

CPU: intel core i7 3770K

GPU: Radeon DD 7950

RAM: 16GB corsair vengence

PSU: corsair HX750 watt

Cooler: coolermaster seidon 240M

MOB: MSI Z77A-G45

so if anyone can tell me if its safe to use the on board overclocker or if its better to maually do it, it would be appreciated.

I would just use it as a reference overclock and after it achieves that overclock just try to find the lowest voltage you can. I would use AIDA64 to test your stability.

I have an msi z77a-G45 as well. On it I have a 3570k. Last week I used the auto oc. Took it to 4.2 Jigamigahertz. All fine. No issues what so ever.

Yes it will do, but the problem is it give the CPU far more voltage than it actually need to run at 4.2Ghz, Thus accelerating degradation on the CPU.

For example it could be shoving the voltage up to 1.44v, where as the CPU really only needs 1.18v to run at 4.2Ghz.

MSI OC Genie is actually one of the better automatic overclocking utilities, and it should be safe to use. If you're worried, just check your temps to make sure they're not too high.

+1 on this I'm running OC genie II and there seems to be no problems everything runs great.

1.136v here- Haven't changed it. Your argument is invalid. :P

Whilst on Prime 95 runs.

[Edit] Went up to 1.163v. Still less than you say.

No its not invalid, all CPU and motherboards are different.

Given you are only going to 4.2 your voltages won't go stupid crazy........try pushing it beyond 4.4Ghz and above and then see what it uses.

I know this for a fact (not speculation) that if i overclock my 3770k (notice i have the same CPU as the OP) using one of these Auto overclock utilities, it uses crazy amounts of voltage, compared to what i have to use if i overclock it the correct way, using the bios and a manually set voltage.

The numbers a quoted where random numbers, for me running at 4.5Ghz 1.44v is what an auto tuner will set it, if i set in manually 1.31 is all i need. big difference, my current clock in 4.3ghz running at 1.20v if i set that using a auto tuner it will go to 1.35Ghz

Also these utilities start messing about with the base clock which i would not recommend, as it will overclock you ram.

To sum up you are going to make your CPU much hotter and not last as longs as it would as it would if you where to set it manually.

OC genie is hit or miss.  It will run your CPU at 4.2GHz but voltages can vary.  I'd say as long as it's under 1.4V (still high) you're fine if temps are fine.

Specs: Core I7-2600K @ 4.5GHz @ 1.35V, 4x4GB Corsair Vengeance Black 1600MHz CL9, Cooler Master Evo 212, MSI Z77 Mpower Motherboard, Sapphire Radeon HD 7950 Vapor-X @ 1000/1400, Cooler Master HAF 932 Blue Edition w/ 3 Cougar Hydraulic Bearing 120MM fans (2 up top 1 in the bottom) replaced side panel with a window, and rear fan with a Cougar Hydraulic Bearing 140MM, Cooler Master GX 650 80+ Bronze PSU, Samsung DVD-RW, Samsung 840 Pro 128GB SSD, Seagate 750GB SATA III 7200RPM
