i just built my new computer and i installed win7 but didn't want to use it so i upgraded to win 8.1.

i start up my computer go into bios set my usb as the boot device i select my 500gb hdd. then i start up the OS installer get to the part where i choose the HDD then  i go on my 500gb(only shows 464gb for some reason) HDD advance push new(ive tried formatting it)  then next. this is when it gets annoying it didn't work so i did what i did last time while installing win7, i used dban on my hard drive. so i thought it would work like it worked when i did it with win7 but it didn't it. Still says cant find or create new partition. iv'e tried using several diskpart solutions but it doesn't work. im really confused thinking of wasting another 10 hours using dban so before i do that can someone help need help ASAP

No need to DBAN anything, just a simple quick format will do the trick. Do you have a bottable USB/DVD of Windows 8.1 that you can boot from? Are you making sure to delete all partitions in the windows installer and then selecting the one unallocated partition > new > next?
