DirectX12 vs Mantle

1RuneKing

I remember at some point seeing a LTT video or AFAP video about DX12 and how it compared to mantle,  and how both compared to DX11.... Anyone remember what video it was? Or did I read it on a page anywhere? I can't find it :P

JUST WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK I AM????

DX12 takes some (nearly all) of the advantages of mantle. There are a few exceptions, but basically it kind of makes mantle obsolete. Not in the sense that it's better (it's not, it's just on par with), but because it's so much more widely adopted, there's no reason to code for DX12 as well as mantle, so people will just code for DX12.

Yeah, the point I was trying to make to a friend was that DX12 was on par rwith Mantle, that AMD wouldn't hold any advantage.

Just show him this quote from AMD.

"However, if you are a developer interested in Mantle "1.0" functionality, we suggest that you focus your attention on DirectX® 12 or GLnext."

Its good to go with DirectX12 because it seems to have little advantage over mantle..

Mantle has all but been dropped now. It's done it's job, which was to spark DX12. No more development will be done on it, but the current version will remain. There's basically no point in worrying about Mantle now though

Why do people always get their facts twisted? Mantle is not dead. AMD is still working on Mantle and will continue to improve upon it. The difference is they won't be pushing it so hard towards game developers since DirectX 12 is a spitting image of Mantle. Tho Mantle will still be used in games by companies that need something custom and unique that a proprietary API like DirectX could never offer.

If you're using Windows 7 you'll get a free upgrade to Windows 10! :)
