reference r9 290 cooling mod

I'm looking to buy a used reference gigabyte r9 290 and i wonder if it's possible if you remove the shround open the top of the fins and slap a fan on. would that work ? another posibility is using corsair h50 but have to buy kraken g10  and gpu would go into slot 2 on motherboard(p8p67pro) and my pci wireless card is in 6th slot would that fit ?

You could get a corsair HG10 and an AiO, or something like the arctic cooling aftermarket cooler would do better than removing the shroud, as it's not just that that's the main issue with it.

the kraken G10 and Corsair H50 will barely take up 2 slots. you will be fine putting a PCI wireless NIC in slot 6.

 

*edit* I should say the H50 Quiet Edition... but I don't think the old version H50 even fits anyway.

i think im gonna wait for 3xxx or pascal or wait for 980's to go second hand for ~200€

i can get the reference one for 170€ or the tri-x 290 for 240 or if i take more than one tri-x i can get them for less

I busted out the old cell phone camera to check, yeah it would definitively be a tight fit trying to get a PCI card next to a G10. In the pic I have my Sound card in slot 1, gpu's are slot 2 and 5.
