Well, my Gigabyte version of the card whines a fair bit on some less intensive older games without frame cap hits like 250+ fps. Although it is 40 dollars cheaper than the STRIX. Also, adding a 120 frame cap or enabling v-sync just solves the problem. However, I suspect that all cards whine at a certain ridiculous frame rate (like 1000 fps) and that is why Linus uses the 10+ year old Halo out of all things to demonstrate coil whine in his videos.

EVERY card whines at a certain point. Hearing the whine, or even get to the point of whining... that's another story.

I have to say, my 970 has only ever whined in ONE particular application that uses the gpu at 99%. And, as said by the developers, that particular application doesn't even run very well on Maxwell GPUs anyway, so.... yeah. Also, I figured out that if I OCed my card high enough, the pitch of the whine became so high thata it started to leave the audible levels, thus sounding quieter.

Anyway, back to OP. Just chill. Getting a whiny card can happen, but it isn't very common. IF you'd like to make sure that you don't get any problem, the only way is to not get ANY gpu.

Most cards are prone to coil whine. Some are just faulty and can be RMA'd. It's normal with others. I know my 280X screams during cutscenes and other extremely high-FPS clips.

Need help with the RMA/retail side of things? Feel free to send me a PM, always happy to share my industry experience with others.
