So theres this thing my customers and myself want to know. what is the best brand of flash drive. Now we know if you spend alot of money on any flash drive its going to kick some downright ass. but ive always been a big fan of sandisk..............UNTILL they started making  it read as a damned harddrive instead of a flash drive. which is just above all else the stupidest thing ever. so i gathered every sandisk flash drive i could get my hands on and tested it with some brute force. and my PNY flash drive and a harddrive for base speed.

TEST RESULTS

1 1.7GB file

1 TB Harddrive 7200 RPM - 0:07 Seconds

16GB PNy USB Flash drive - 2:59 Mins

8GB Sandisk Cruzer Blade - 3:24 Mins

4GB Sandisk Cruzer - 6:03 Mins

16GB Sandisk Mini - Fried before it finished 2 mins in

Accumulative 1.7 GB files.

1TB Harddrive 7200 RPM - 0:21s Seconds

16GB PNy USB Flash drive - 3:42 Mins

8GB Sandisk Cruzer Blade - 5:16 Mins

4GB Sandisk Cruzer - 7:48 Mins

16GB Sandisk Mini - Fried...cant test -0:01 Seconds

Performance: (this is basically just windows progression speculation)

1TB Harddrive 7200 RPM - Its a hard drive. it reads fast. it writes fast.

16GB PNy USB Flash drive - Runs normally till the end. then freezes till done.

8GB Sandisk Cruzer Blade - fills up rapidly and freezes at the end.

4GB Sandisk Cruzer - Copies a large amount and then freezes then repeats till finished

16GB Sandisk Mini - If it was a peice of bacon. it would be awesome

Not at all what i was expecting. since sandisk costs MORE then your average PNY. also keep in mind some seconds might be off track due to some human error.

now i dont have anymore to test. but if you would i would like you to look at your flash drive. upload a 1.7GB file to it and tell me how long it takes to write to it.

use this spiffy little timer here.

NOW i want this test to be done ONLY with USB drives under the 20$ mark. and no ebay prices dont count. because like myself. i tested a 50$ flash drive and it was pretty incompairable how much better it was. im looking for specific flash drives that i could recommend to customers. and the versatility of them. here are the flashdrives im specifically looking to test.

HP
Kingston
Lexar
PNY
SanDisk
Sony
Transcend
Verbatim

c: ill be watching this. and happy testing.

The reason your HDD was so fast was because you DIDNT ACTUALLY MOVE THE FILE

You just changed the pointer location. This means the 1.7GB doesnt actually change places, just the location of the pointer to that data.

incorrect c: i have 2 harddrives. both are 7200RPM. one is an 80gb seagate and the other is a 1tb seagate.  i moved it form the 80gb to the 1tb

That's impossible because sata 3 does not support 24 GIGABYTES PER SECOND

also theres no drive in the world that fast

you underestimate data 3 with an average HDD your looking at 100mbps between drives in theory

Thats that. If you need to get in touch chances are you can find someone that knows me that can get in touch.

sooo. 100 MB/S

1700 MB should take around 17 seconds then?

cut and paste is faster i believe. what i was doing to the flash drives. that would be counter intuitive to go against testing.

EDIT:just for you mister enderman. i did both cut and copy. cut was 7 seconds. copy was 9 seconds...rendering in sony as i type.

well...if you saw the spoiler i was going by a minute testing format. 0m:0(10s)0(1's)

so... 0.07 woul d=  7 seconds. 0.70 would = 1 min and 10 seconds...

regardless were getting off topic. go test your flashdrives peeps

thaaats how we do things at the office when doing statistic nonsense...have to write it like that or its inaccurate. no idea. so i did the same thing. force of habit? now if i had a harddrive that wrote 1.7gb in 70ms id be rich.

When you're someone like me :P and need cheap flash drives for like. windows vista/7/8 and then unbuntu 14. yeah ya need alot of 8GBish flash drives. that read AS flash drives. and id like to recommend my customers good products for a cheap price. sandisk is not EITHER of those now. since 1. they're slow as hell even compared to the 16gb pny. and they read as harddrives not removeable storage. SO. cant use them to install windows/boot unbuntu.

it coudl all fit on a 32GB but.....wouldnt be able to install one...

You'll probably find that's writing to the cache, even 7 seconds is too fast for 1.7GB, often things will get written to a cache while the writing to the drive platters will continue in the background.

http://www.thewindowsclub.com/enable-disable-disk-write-caching-windows-7-8

IIRC the fastest standard retail drives available now write at about 150MB/s to the outer edge of the platter (slowing down as you move towards the spindle) and drives like the 1TB velociraptors (10,000RPM) write at about 220MB/s to the outer edge.

I would suggest things like HD Tune, ATTO or Crystal Disk Mark for speed testing :)

well when you're comparing flash drives :P which dont have a spindle or anything...yaknow? it was just to test what windows thought was "done"
