yeah 10k and 15k drives have a higher failure rate

thats why almost nobody uses those anymore

 

they use lots of power, make lots of noise, and dont give a worthy performance improvement

if you really need more speed than a 7200rpm drive you should really just buy an SSD

no, solid state has taken over the "speed" part of the storage market

HDDs are being pushed into mass storage only, with 5,6,8, and 10TB drives coming out

these mass storage HDDs are still only 5900rpm because of all the platters they have to move

 

i dont see 10k/15k drives coming back, ever

As flash memory gets cheaper and cheaper, my guess is within 5 years SSDs will be the high-capacity storage medium as well as the speed medium.

 

The price drops every month.
