840M OC?

BellaMoonshade

So I have a HP J17 envy with an nvida 840m inside of it my question for you all is can I OC this gpu, Yes I know it is a laptop GPU and there is risks when doing so but it mostly sits on a desk and always has a laptop fan mat under it. The reason for wanting to OC this notebook is because its rather choppy and dips in frames when playing games in high or ultra settings and when I drop them to medium I see only a tad difference in frame rates.

Specs:

Laptop: HP ENVY 17 Notebook PC

Os: Windows 8.1 64-bit

Cpu: Intel® Core i7-4710MQ CPU @ 2.50GHz

Ram: 12GB (4GB  Samsung 1333MHz and 8GB  Samsung 1333MHz)

Gpu: NVIDIA GeForce 840M

Cpu Gpu: Intel® HD Graphics 4600

Anything more needed let me know~ :P

your frames are probably dropping because your GPU is already thermal throttling, not because it isnt performing well enough

check your temps

just because you have a fan underneath doesnt mean its not overheating

It's an 840m...maxwell. I doubt it's overheating. I bet it could be passively cooled. I think the frame rate dips are from it being a low end mobile chip. It's an 840... anything lower than X50 is typically really slow.

Dude its a 1,500 dollar laptop :/ Ya I know its not "Gaming" but it still should be able to pump out more power for its price range

If it's not a gamer laptop, don't expect gamer laptop performance.  Hell, 840m is worse than what's in my mac... (no offense)

Basically what I'm saying is 1. you shouldn't buy a non-gaming laptop for gaming and 2. don't expect good temps just because you payed a lot of money for something.  HP is notorious for bad cooling

Want a good game to play?  Check out Shadowrun: http://store.steampowered.com/app/300550/ (runs on literally any hardware)

Without a modified vbios you could try limited OC with "nvidia inspector" but check first on VRAM usage. If going over your 2GB of VRAM then system memory DRAM may also be used and cause stuttering.

You might just have to be content with medium settings.

You paid $1500 for THAT? Wow, you got ripped off. You could have gotten a W370SS for less with an 860M and an i7 and it'd have been cooled better and be designed to facilitate OCing. AND it wouldn't have had a 900p screen.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

That price is about on par for HP laptops. Seems the attractiveness for thinner and lighter at extra cost out weighs the heavier, lower cost higher performance laptops for many people. Pun not intended :)
