Gigabyte 970 -> 980 upgrade program?

Seen here and here some people got email from Gigabyte regarding an option to upgrade their 970s to 980s for some sum of money. They require you to send them all the information about your graphics card (S/N, BIOS ver, model No, etc) to get a quote at exactly how much the upgrade will cost as far as I understand. The reddit thread is saying that this is US only and possibly Canada. Has anyone had any experience with this? Is it worth it?

Bought mine from Amazon. No email. I read thru quite a number of posts on the first link. It appears to be hit and miss. And if it does happen it takes a while and the upgrade appears to be around $220 to $250. Doesn't appear to be worth the time and effort.

My Gaming Rig (Build November 2014):

CPU: i7-4790K | CPU Cooler: H110 | Motherboard: MSI Z97s SLI Plus | RAM: Vengeance DDR3 1886 MHz 2 x 4GB |
