So was thinking of picking a pair of these up but I'm not sure, I was Linus' unboxing but thats 3 years old.

How does it work? I mean do games/movies need to support it to use it?

I've got a 3D Vision ready monitor and a 970 so fine on that part, just how does it integrate into the media?

Also worth picking up with VR right around the corner?

I bought the first version of 3D vision when it first came out, and tried it again recently. The 3D effect is pretty good overall. However, there are some drawbacks:

1. Support in games- you'll need to tweek options in a lot of games to remove 'strange' effects that show up. For instance, water reflections in Skyrim. Even with tweeks, you'll still see some distracting effects.

2. Although it is nice to play a game in 3D, it's a lot like watching 3D movies. It's cool at first, but over time you notice the effect less and less. Days later, when you think back to the game you'll have forgotten whether you even played it in 3D or not. The reason for this is that although it is pretty cool, it doesn't "immerse" you in the game world much more than if you didn't have 3D glasses on. Before you were staring at a world though a camera (monitor), and with 3D vision you're viewing a world though a window. It's an improvement, but you still don't feel like your "there".  For that you'll need a VR headset, with all of it's associated issues.

In conclusion, I would say that if you have a monitor that supports high frame rates (120 Hz), then it's definitely worth the $100 for the glasses - no question. However, I don't think it's worth buying a new monitor just for this.

I love it....to be honest Im so disapointed more games dont support it. That being said you will need a powerful machine it halfs your framerate.

Gonna tell you a bit of a story.

I was playing Dishonored with it, if you dont know dishonored has alot of climbing on rooftops in 1st person. I was on a rooftop, with 3d vision and for whatever reason I wanted to get a better look over the edge. I walked up and looked down. Now, im not afraid of heights...Ive been on the CN towers (if you know of it) glass floor and jumped on it. But I looked down in game and I walked closer to the edge then I realized and seeing the drop I got that sinking feeling in my gut when you are genuinely frightened.

Instinctively I pressed my S key to back pedal cause I was just not comfortable with the drop. I didnt say "I dont like this im going to step back, I seen the drop. Got the feeling and my reaction was just get away from the danger. Never once has a game made me feel like that before.

Furthermore for some reason I find the game world so much more intresting to look at, at things I honestly would NEVER look twice at in non 3D. for some reason I was very compelled to look at paintings in dishonored. just looking over the texture of the brushstrokes I dont know why..I really dont but I find myself doing it without realizing alot.

Metro 2033...I thought it looked pretty good (played it within the last year not when it was new) but upon trying it with 3d vision I would say its the best looking thing ive layed eyes on. I dont know why..but I find it so much more aesthetically pleasing looking at games in 3d then just typical 2D.

The downfalls of which I mentioned, not all games support it, and not all games that do work flawlessly gta4 for example the shadows dont render properly

You need a powerful ass system to run it without turning your settings down

and this 3d tech is not the same tech as you will see in movie theaters they use something called passive 3d, this is active 3d. in my opinion active conveys a much deeper sense of depth (also im pretty sure passive 3d runs at half resolution) but since this tech isnt the same if you were not prone to headaches with 3d movies it doesnt mean you will be ok with active 3d tech as well.

Id also personally wait for vr tech to mature a bit..see which between vive (or whatever) and rift is getting more praise/support, movies I have found VERY fickle and dont toy with them much...but porn in 3d was something to behold I will say that :P
