So i'm not really in the need for and storage but this question has been on my mind for a while. In what order do the WD HDD fall in, ( ex: #1 green, #2 Caviar black or whatever,) and just the top 5. I'm not good with telling the difference between HDD and i would really like to know.

Thanks for the help!

If you are asking this question, the order your looking for is most likely Black > Green > Blue, but other types of drives, such as Red, are for certain workloads. For 1TB of General use if you don't plan to put the OS on, or for budget builds would be blue. Anything higher than that for general use green. For advanced use, or plan to put an os on, use WD Black. Servers should be looking at drives like Reds.

They all have different purposes. Blue is what I recommend for the average consumer. I think green is low temps and reliability. Red is for NAS. Purple is real time (like security camera). Black is performance (but at that point you should probably get an SSD)

BLUE: consumer/normal

GREEN: quieter, slower, more reliable

BLACK: performance

RED: server/constant use scenarios

Hi there @D_s_stone56!

I agree with the others - it depends on the purpose you want to use the drive for.

WD Black is meant for performance and has the build-in features like dynamic cache (which optimizes the cache allocation) and no touch ramp technology (the recording head never touches the disk) that will give you faster loading times in gaming and has 5 years limited warranty as well. The Green drive is designed for secondary storage/backup purposes and it's energy efficient, cool operating and quiet HDD. And WD Blue is meant for everyday computing usage.

Hope this helps!

Cheers! :)
