My spouse's system is enclosed in a Thermaltake V9 BlacX Edition.  It had a 230 mm top fan.

The fan went out.

after much looking I finally got a replacement from Thermaltake and installed it. The new fan is noisey as heck and i get the impression it wont last long.

Finaly i said the heck with it, and purchased a new Rosewill BLACKHAWK Gaming ATX Mid Tower and moved the system into it.  SWEET case.

Is it just me or is 230x230 just too big for a good fan?

I don't think you're alone on that. It's difficult to make fans that are quiet at such large diameters. 140mm is the largest diameter most will target -- Noctua and BlackNoise don't make anything larger than that. But I don't think there's much larger than that with a good noise profile -- and if they exist, they're bound to be expensive as well. One thing that may also have been causing the noise is vibration against the case: those large fans probably have a lot of movement to them, and vibration isolators probably could've tempered the noise, but I doubt it would've completely silenced it.

I don't like those huge fans either. 120 and 140mm are the sweet spot.

I wouldn't go any larger than 180mm for a case fan, and only a silverstone fan at that, but I think 140mm is the sweet spot. 200mm+ fans just create too much noise to be suitable.

I haven't used any fans larger than the 200mm in my NZXT Phantom 630 case but I'm running 3 of them with a 140mm on the CPU cooler and another 140mm on the extra spot. To be honest they are just as quiet as I could ask of any fan I've used.

That said you do know when they spool up to 700rpm but even still they are quiet to me
