Looking for an SSD for a booty drive, and to record to (very minimal recording). This is my first SSD, have no idea which one to get.

Crucial MX100 or Samsung 840 or 850 EVO are solid choices for a entry level SSD.

Writing to a SSD frequently can lower it's overall lifetime however. Not too signifiant but it does.

who cares...

The 840 Evo does have that recurring slowdown issue, even if it's not necessarily a big deal, and the MX100 is usually cheaper for the same performance. So I'd say the MX100, along with the very similar performing Sandisk Ultra II. Or even the BX100/MX200, which are the slightly slower and faster siblings of the MX100.

The 850 Evo is faster than any of these, but it does cost more. Not what I'd call a budget SSD, more of an excellent midrange SSD.

Ignore the MX100 train. Get an OCZ Arc 100 instead. Much faster writes and slightly slower reads. About the same price. Both @ and I own them and they are wonderful.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

Not true. The OCZ Arc 100 has significantly lower write speeds than the MX100 where it counts (4K random, low QD).

Look at the 128GB versions - what's he's looking at. The 120GB Arc 100 has significantly faster writes than the 128GB MX100.

'Tis why I bought an Arc 100 over the MX100. The read speeds are a fair bit different on benchmarks, but what will get Windows updates installed and bigger files moved about are those write speeds.

EIT: Agh, too many SSD threads. He wasn't specifically looking at 128GB SSDs was he :/

Well, if 120 GB or so is your goal then get the OCZ. If 240 GB is your goal, get the MX100. Fair enough.

Yeah, that makes sense. Personally I think the ~256 GB class is what people should go for if at all possible, since it's down in the $100 range now. With any luck we'll be able to say the same for the ~512 GB class within a year.

Then HDDs will DIE. Maybe. It'll be awhile before we can get solid state storage to the price per GB of hard drive storage.
