Ok so i am having i7 4790k and motherboard is maximus vi extreme. So it's obvious that 4790k will run on z97 mobos but we can use 4790k with z87 mobo by use flashback bios updating. I know how to fo that but in many forums they are saying that for 4790k to work you will need another cpu installed and update using asus bios updater and then i will be able to use 4790k on z87 mobi. So please tell me is that correct or not.

You should be able to use BIOS Flashback, which is different from the ASUS BIOS updater, or the BIOS flash tool within the BIOS.

To use the BIOS Flashback function:

1) Format a USB thumb drive to FAT32 <- critically necessary step

2) Download the latest BIOS that supports your chip from ASUS's website.

3) Download the BIOS renamer utility.

4) Put both the BIOS file and renamer utility within the root (main folder) of the USB.

5) Run the renaming utility and confirm that the name has changed. Usually changes from long to shorter name. Delete the renaming utility.

6) Make sure your MOBO has been installed/grounded correctly into your case. Plug in all necessary power cables. The x2 4pin ATX CPU cables are probably not necessary for this procedure, but I would have everything plugged in anyways. The CPU does not need to be installed at this point.

7) Put the USB into the appropriate BIOS flashback USB slot. The slot changes from board to board, so check the manual. Most of the time is is adjacent from the Flashback button, or a different I/O shield color (mine's green).

8) Hold the BIOS Flashback button with the computer off for 3 seconds. The light will begin to flash. When it is done flashing the BIOS has been updated.

9) Install your CPU

Have fun.

That makes no sense. The BIOS Flashback utility updates the BIOS with or without a CPU installed. It's completely irrelevant. If you're updating to a BIOS version that supports the CPU you are trying to install it should work. If people are claiming that it didn't work it's far more likely that they didn't perform the Flashback correctly. There may be some conflict if they had their CPU installed while they were doing it, but even that is highly unlikely.

There's some video evidence. Follow the steps. It will work.

NP. The Flashback requires a very specific procedure. If they didn't format the USB properly, rename the .CAP properly, skipped a step, etc. etc. it won't work. If you flash from within the BIOS you can get away with having the wrong .cap file name, wrongly formatted USB, etc. There's almost no way to screw it up from within the BIOS unless you pull the power.

Direct the nay-sayers to that video, they messed something up.

USB BIOS flash back is used a last option, if the a unsupported cpu is installed and you need to update the bios or could be use to reflash the bios, when bios update got corrupted and you've nuked your board. For all other updates, just go into the bios and run EZ Flash.

Current Asus boards, even if bios is not updated to the most current, it should still boot, just with a error saying unsupported cpu, go into bios, update bios and then, that error should go away.
