whats a xeon?

Go to solution Solved by dadasmithywinkle,

I know its a cpu but I though it was like a 1,000 dollar workstation cpu or something like that what is it used for?

Xeon's are CPU's that are made to handle heavy loads and be on constantly.

They can range from the power of an i5 to more power than a 5960X.

It has a high amount of Cache, which I think is useful for editing. I dont really know much about how editing and rendering things work.

My PC Specs

Workstation or server type cpu's. They are like i7's and higher without a gpu and they have locked multipliers. They can by much more powerful than even the extreme edition cpu's though. More cores, usually low clocks speeds. Like 18 cores, 2.3ghz

Ryzen 3700x -Evga RTX 2080 Super- Msi x570 Gaming Edge - G.Skill Ripjaws 3600Mhz RAM - EVGA SuperNova G3 750W -500gb 970 Evo - 250Gb Samsung 850 Evo - 250Gb Samsung 840 Evo  - 4Tb WD Blue- NZXT h500 - ROG Swift PG348Q

Just high end server CPU's mainly focused on servers, editing, etc.

My life is consumed by CS:GO, even though I'm not exceptionally good at it.

CPU: AMD A10-5800K | GPU: Gigabyte R9 270 2GB | RAM: 8GB 1333Mhz HyperX Blu | Storage: 120GB Samsung 850 EVO + 1TB WD Caviar Blue | Chassis: NZXT H230 | Mobo: Gigabyte GA-F2A88XM-HD3 | PSU: Corsair CX500 500W | Cooling: CM Hyper 212 EVO | OS: Windows 10
In order of priority: GTX 970 Strix, 2 good 1080p monitors, i5 4690k, MSI Z97 Gaming 5 LGA 1150, a job

They are server grade microprocessors. There are some that are pretty much copies of consumer microprocessors such as the E3 family which is pretty much locked copies of the desktop counterparts with ECC support. Then you get up into the E5 and E7 families where they become full blown server microprocessors.

Xeon E3 are i5 and i7 with minor changes. For instance, a Xeon E3-1220v3 is an i5-4570 with an extra 2MB cache, 100MHz lower clock, and no iGPU. E3-1241v3 is an i7-4771 with no iGPU. E3-1276v3 is an i7-4790, including an iGPU, though I'm not sure if it is as good as the HD Graphics 4600. They all support ECC RAM, they're binned to run 24/7, they have lower power requirements, and they have better stock fans on top of the same stock heatsink as the i5, i7 have.

As for Xeon E5 and E7, they're straight workstation and server grade stuff, and the prices reflect that. They won't be as good for gaming as an i5, i7, or Xeon E3. It's kind of funny that consumer grade i7s are the i3 equivalent in the Xeon line.
