While building my first ever custom PC i ACCIDENTALLY forgot to take off the plastic cover on the Hyper 212 EVO.. worst part was i already attached it & put the thermal compound on. So my friend, who was assisting, had no idea what to do. Me being a total drama-queen i freak out, eventually leading my to my friend literally PULLING OUT the CPU stuck to the evo SMOTHERED in sticky thermal paste.

So, after this tragic event, i have some questions.

First of all, is my motherboard damaged? I'm using a Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 (Rev.4). When the CPU was ripped out it was still locked in place.

Second of all, will my CPU be okay? Some of the pins are covered in thermal compound & one of the pins was SLIGHTLY (But not badly) bent, which i fixed.

Only way to tell is to clean up the TIM and reapply the cooler properly.

I suggest you keep your friend away from it if he's going to rip something out again.

EDIT: Most TIM is not conductive, so it shouldn't have damaged the CPU.

Right after my friend did the deed we had to slowly push the CPU away from the evo and in the process i touched the pins for less than a second. Should i be worried?

And what about the motherboard?

Photos wouldn't help since the pins are so small. All i can say is that some of the pins are covered in thermal compound & that's it. Not much else to it.

Very very very delicately clean the pins with a microfibre cloth and 99 percent alcohol. Use very small amounts of alcohol on it though

So i'm assuming just dab the pins with alcohol every so often? Because some of the pins are completely covered in it...

Not really. PC components aren't that sensitive, just touching them won't break them. pulling them out of the motherboard might.

Only thing you can do is test it to see if it's fine.

You can use a small piece of toilet paper or a Q-Tip and very carefully remove the TIM from the pins. Take your time with it, being very gentle.

Don't worry about every so often, if it's non conductive alcohol then you'll be fine just having at it, I mainly ignore the 99 percent alcohol rule for pretty much everything and use metho instead because cost reasons, that's why I use a tiny bit of cleaner at a time. But pretty much just dab it till the cloth is dirty then get some clean cloth, wet it with alcohol and dab at it gently and repeat till the compound is gone.

We've all messed with pins at some point or another so it's not a big deal.

Well damn, I've managed to rip a CPU out of its socket while locked in before, though that was because the cooler had been on it for years and the thermal paste had hardened and was acting sort of like cement.

The CPU still worked perfectly fine after that, guess I just got lucky.

Perhaps use a Q-Tip or two to clean the pins carefully?

A q tip or tissue or toilet paper is fine to remove TIM from the heatspreader, but I'ld never use it to clean the pins

I can only assume that this is a AMD build????? Being that the pins are on the MB? And also pulling a intel CPU off the board is damn near impossible!

I'm assuming you mean on the CPU itself? AMD chips have the pins on the CPU, not the motherboard.

And yea, Intel's locking mechanism is much better than AMD boards. Probably cause the pins are on the board, not the chip.

Qtip is probably too big for the pins, but putting a small bit of toilet paper in between the pins to get rid of any TIM in between the pins should work okay.
