Hi there, I recently put together a PC for my GF with old parts. it boot, it works fine for browsing and watch movies, but every time she tries to launch a game (ex: portal2) the computer shuts down.

the CPU is an AMD Athlon X2 250 with 4gb of ram, 500gb HDD, a dvd drive, and a Gtx 650ti 2 gb. no overclocks.

is the psu too old/weak for the hardware?

I could tear down my shrine and try and swap our PSU see if it solves the problem, but...you know, my precious "cable management".

may your framerates be high and your temperatures be low. #pcmr

no overclocks, ill check the connection tonight, havent download any temp monitor, yet. its a junk from her dad's old HP pavillon

If it is good 400W it should be ok-ish, if it is bad PSU your house will burn down :D

yeah im worried now. lol

Depends what PSU it is. If it's a cheap-ass Chinese 400W then your issues don't come as a surprise

Yeah chances are it wasn't designed to handle a dedicated GPU

well, there was a GPU in there, its boxed somewhere, but i remember it has a tiny heatsink with a very small blowout fan.

the Gtx 650ti I put in there, as per Zotac website, they recommand a 400watt psu. thought it would work, but it doesnt, oh well.

should I give her my 730w raidmax and get a Evga 650watt for my setup? or should I get a 50$ 500watt psu for my GF computer?

may your framerates be high and your temperatures be low. #pcmr

Give her the Raidmax and get something else, but not that EVGA.

Can never have too much reassurance.

What's your budget for a new PSU if you were to get one for yourself?

90-120$ my case has a side window, so modular or semi-modular is something im looking for. sleeved cables if possible. does it really worth to get a 80+ gold or platinum? or is bronze good enough?

No problem. The Enermax Revolution X't is a CWT-made unit, similar to the Corsair RM, but performs slightly better and is much cheaper when on sale. The XFX XTR is a Seasonic G on the inside, but features full modularity and a better fan with passive mode.

I am yet to find a bad review about http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=EVGA+Supernova+G2+750w&N=-1&isNodeId=1and I got told to choose this over the Corsair RM 750 as this EVGA Supernova G2 is a much better power supply, I know it's slightly over budget.

EDIT: removed the part about the EVGA G1 650w, since that was the one you previously linked, woops.
