really the only way to improve is to check that its not being used as a hotspot and/or switch to an AC router but that would need you to get new wifi cards

Right now I have a combined modem/router from my isp, will using a dedicated router increase internet bandwidth? I've been have issues with slowdowns when others download things even though my pc is connected via Ethernet

Not really. You experience slowdowns when others download things because of how the router does priority. You should be able to give yourself high priority / bandwidth and others lower priority / bandwidth in your router configuration. Your connection type wont factor into much in this case.

is there anyway to avoid slowdown for everyone at once or is this slowdown unavoidable

It will either lower, increase, or not change bandwidth for users depending on how you apply it and to whom. To put it more simply think of internet traffic like a list of things for your router to do. when you have higher priority, the stuff that you want done will show up more often which allows you to finish your transmission faster.
