Hello, I am relatively new to computer modding,
I have an Acer Aspire 5742ZG and using it primarily for Android Studio. im just wondering if it is better if i upgrade the CPU from pentium p6100 to intel core i3-330m or just stay with the processor. would there be a significant difference?

I'm 95% sure you can't upgrade that CPU.

You probably can't, laptop CPUs are generally non-removable, and that one is really old anyways.

I mean the other 5% is hoping that OP is really, really good with a soldering iron right?

Some people are, but it probably would fail outright anyway.

well, i have seen someone upgrade an acer aspire 5742 series laptop from an i3 to an i5,

http://www.overclock.net/t/1433763/modding-pimp-my-notebook-acer-aspire-5742g-the-tag.

The guy on the post seemed to already know what he's doing and is most probably a seasoned modder of hardware. He's using his experience and knowledge and applying it to his project and wasn't doing it based on a guide he found on the internet. Believe me, I have an i5 MSI GE60 and if I could upgrade (or even just overclock) the CPU from its stock 2.5ghz speed I would do it in a heartbeat but with my current technical skills with modding, I'll probably just wreck it.

that's an exception, that guy is probably really good or he is just that type of guy that likes to tinker

most laptop cpu's are not upgradable

That looks like it's a socketed CPU though, from his pics.

For reference, look at mine in its socket:

Laptopinsides.jpg

In that case, it's simply a case of lifting the CPU out and plopping a new one in.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

Actually, there are some mobile sockets, such as rPGA988B that feature removable mobile CPUs. My HP laptop is one of those with removable mobile CPUs.

I had success with my wife's older Compaq laptop. Upgraded it from a Pentium Dual Core to a Core 2 Duo. It was a socketed setup, so it was easy. I wanted to clean the dust out and replace the thermal paste anyway. As the chip was laying around I decided to give it ago. Was pleased.

Not all laptops are that straight forward, though.

Yeah there's a ridiculous amount of misinformed people who assume only 5% of notebooks have socketed chips.

Well actually right now only 1% of new ones have socketed chips, since Intel is only letting soldered chips be used in new machines (without making a press release, I might add). Oh well.

At least everything's thin now, so that's good right? /sarcasm

This is the worst mistake ever, after the Pentium 4 lawsuit. Intel should give mobile owners the ability to upgrade their CPU like a desktop.

Yeah. You're right. Wanna know the worst part? The HQ chips are inherently TDP limited, unlike MQ. They directly ignore BIOS settings about power limits, and are throttle machines under any kind of high load. You know, like rendering. Livestreaming. Playing CPU intensive games above 60fps. That kind of stuff.

And they were. Most chips were socketed for over 10 years. But everybody assumed "oh integrated crap" and didn't bother with looking for sockets, and the whole new thin/light craze is only possible with integrated chips, because the socket adds height.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.
