Fattal’s company, appropriately named Leia, will demonstrate a prototype of its new 3-D display next week at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Later this year it plans to release a small display module capable of producing full-color 3-D images and videos that are visible—with no special glasses—from 64 different viewpoints.

Leia’s goal is to make the company’s technology cheap and compact enough to be integrated into smartphones and other mobile devices. It can be used to produce imagery ”that floats above the screen” and that users can interact with, founder and CEO David Fattal said in a presentation last year.

Potential applications include maps with buildings that pop out or games where a ball comes out the screen, according to Fattal.

The technology is based on an invention called multi-view display, which was initially developed at HP Labs. It’s based on a thin piece of transparent plastic or glass that’s illuminated from the side with standard LEDs. Different images are created for the left and right eye to produce a sense of depth.

At Mobile World Congress, Leia plans to demonstrate its technology using real-time video chat, Fattal told MIT Technology Review.

So, an aptly named company "Leia" has developed a hologram display that works with a 60 degree field of view. The technology stems from Hewlett Packard Labs and utilised LCD display with LED light sources. A test/demo module is scheduled to be released soon.

Personally, I would love to see this tech come to smartphones and smart watches. It probably won't be refined for the next few years, but if there were a smart watch with a hologram display, I would buy one in a heartbeat! The article also mentions that this isn't Star Wars style holograms yet, but it is step in the right direction.

Thoughts? How many of you would be interested in a smartphone or smart watch with a hologram display?

So this isn't really a hologram, I know holograms can be viewed from all angels and all directions, but hey maybe I'm wrong.

The technology is awesome.

I don't believe it has to have 360 degree field of view to qualify as a hologram. A hologram just means (by definition) that an 3d image can be produced.

Holograms is going to be the future of tech!!!!

It really is. It might make a replacement for 3D gaming and 3D monitors/televisions.

Not needing to use stereoscopic glasses is going to be awesome once the technology takes off.

I hope GPU manufacturers see the potential and decide to invest in hardware and software support when the time comes.
