If i were to buy a pentium g3258 and want to later upgrade to an I5 what do these boards have to offer me?

H81 is cheap I noticed.

97 is newest. (Will sky lake be supported on 97?)

What should I be taking into account considering upgradability?

Well... I've found that the z97 generally have the most recent and definitely most robust features.

The projects never end in my line of work.

Well, first of all both the G3258 and the i5 will OC better on Z97.. And much better feature set, better audio, etcetc.. List goes on.

I ran across this thread the other day... It'll answer your question and any future questions you may have on this topic:

All will handle current higher-end CPU's just fine. As far as Skylake support, dont count on it. Buy for today, not the future. The Z97 boards may support it, but the others may/may not. It's all up to the manu's to distro a new bios.

One chipset that you missed was B85. B85 and H97 are great, but H81 and B85 are the best budget options. One thing to keep in mind: none of these support overclocking (aside from multiplier).

My arsenal: i7-9700k Gaming Rig, an iPhone, and Stupidity.

We know. But the z97 boards do give you more headroom, like when you upgrade to your i5 you can overclock it with good board support.

Damn, lol.. That sucks.

Either way, as I mentioned.. the 97 is a much safer bet at any rate.. Especially if you already know ahead of time you'll be switching to an i5, why restrict yourself to such a monstrosity as an H81?

</end personal opinion>

Thanks for reminding me about B85, but multiplier OCing you can dial in a rough OC yet though right? Just shooting for like 4ghz

@MeDownYou

What i5 are we talking about?

Also G3258 can be oced on H81, but not others...

Well, not quite sure yet, could range between 4440-4690k not really sure didn't think that far ahead (but probably a locked one as those are cheaper)

Yeah, it'll be more than good for the G3258.

yeah, i have a hard time justifying spending more on my mobo than my cpu initially though I guess. Can you tell me about z87 boards?

The key word here is initially.

Is it not your entire goal to move to i5 in the future?

There's your answer.

All I'll say? If you're thinking about z87 there's no reason to not get z97.

Yep, true. The only other option I had was to hold out until Zen...but that got pushed back to late 2016 not early 2016 so... yeah

Then if you're getting a 4440/4460 get an H81 to save money. But if you take a 4690K, what would your plans for OC be?

ln2...I mean probably just an air OC Evo 212 or similar

you can oc the pentium on all boards. get h97 over h81/b85 only if you want raid support.thats it. skylake will be on a new socket-1151 . if you plan to get a K cpu in the future get z97

howerver an i3 is a better option instead of the pentium

Skylake is definitely not gonna be supported by z97. Its gonna use socket 1151. If you want to overclock an unlocked i5 or i7 in the future get a z97. If you want to oc the pentium but in the future you're gonna get a locked processor get either an h97 or h81, depending on what features you want.

H81 and an i3 will be a better choice unless you dont want to upgrade your mobo when you upgrade, go with z97 (its rumoured that it will support skylake)

Skylake will be a different socket (1151) and it will have a new chipset. H170/z170
