I've been trying to OC my 8320 but I can't achieve a stable OC so far. I got up to 4.5GHz with 1.45V but i have some problems. First, my PC wont start normaly. I press the ON button but it cycles on and off 1-2 times until it starts. Second, when testing with prime95 the Core speed in CPU-Z drops to 2.9Ghz. Temps don't get passed the 42.c mark. I've turned off all the power saving settings for the CPU and i also disabled the turbo mode.

CPU: AMD FX 8320

MOBO: Gigabyte 970A-DS3P

RAM: Kingston 2x4Gb 1333Mhz

Get a board that isn't naff like a 990FX-UD3.

Or just sell your FX and board and hop to Intel.

You need 990FX chipset board, 970 isnt meant for intense overclocking.

Chipset is not realy directly related to overclock potentional.

There are also a few boards 970 boards, with a decent enough vreg design to do some impressive overclocking.

This has totaly nothing to do with the chipset at all.

But it all depends on the vreg design.

Op´s board is definitely lacking on a decent vreg design.

Thats why it doesnt overclock very well.

  1. Gigabyte GA-970-UD3P 8+2 powerphase + digi vrm
  2. Asus M5A97 EVO R2.0 6+2 powerphase + digi vrm
  3. Asrock 970 performance 8+2 powerphase + digi vrm

Here are a few 970 boards, wo should overclock totaly fine.

True, but if you want to properly OC an 8 core you need 990FX, 970 will be fine for 4 and 6 core FX, thats just how it is mate. Im running my FX 6300 on 990FX tho and really have never seen any instabilities when i do OC.

Chipset does not realy matter.

The vreg design is all that matters.

But Its true that "most" 990FX boards do have a decent vreg design, but definitely not all of them!.

The only big diffrence between 970 and 990FX chipset is mainaly the amount of pci-e lanes.

The 970 chipset only offers 20 pci-e lanes configured as x16 / x4, which automaticly mean that they are NOT Sli compatible, only crossfire on 4x speeds.

990FX chipset boards offer 40 pci-e lanes, and can do sli or crossfire @ 16x

990 chipset boards also have 20 pci-e lanes. But they can do sli and crossfire on 8x.
