Man... this build was hard. I decided to compromise on the system's raw power in order to fit a 1440p monitor in. You can always upgrade your GPU later, and the CPU can hold on for a while, but in regards to the monitor, upgrading now to 1440p will last your a LOOONG time.

Very similar, but doesn't rely on rebates. The R9 290x trades blows with the GTX 970 but is cheaper. Plus, the motherboard and PSU are good enough to support crossfire should he ever decide he wants to throw in a second R9 290x, all for cheaper than your build. If you'd prefer to get an SSD, one option is to instead get the Capstone 750W PSU, AsRock Anniversary Z97 board (full atx, matx version is bad), and drop the HDD for the 250GB Crucial BX100. Just buy an HDD down the road as a mass storage drive when you start filling up the SSD. That's an easy addition.
