I have a bad habit of right clicking on my desktop and hitting that refresh button 20x in a row.

I have tried to quit, but to no avail.

So I thought I would try and remove it.

With a little digging around, I found this small tutorial:

open "Shell32.dll" file in Resource Hacker and goto:

Menu -> 215 -> 1033

In right-side pane, delete the following line:

MENUITEM "R&efresh", 28931, MFT_STRING, MFS_ENABLED

Click on "Compile Script" button and save the file.

But when I open shell32.dll in System32, I do not find the "Menu" item.

I am able to find the Menu item in shell32.dll.mui which is located in System32/en-US

So I edit that file, compile, save to desktop, then copy it and paste it over the file in the en_US folder. Then I restart.

The "Refresh" item is still there in the context menu.

So I deleted the file altogether and rebooted. Windows works without the file.

That must mean that the context menu is saved in another location??

I downloaded a shell32.dll from the web and when I open it, I am able to find the "Menu" item. But, these files break my copy of windows so I must replace it with original.

Anyone have similar experiences? Anyone have a solution?

UPDATE: Ok, so after a Windows Update, the Refresh button from the context menu is now gone. I guess there was an update to one of the files involved and Windows did a little refresh which registered my hack.

No. I never clicked it on my desktop and it helps since I have network drives that don't update immediately.
