Looking at refreshing my audio system and I really wanna make it good. REALLY good.
I don't do any video editing or audio work. Just looking for a really good system. A friend of mine who DOES do audio engineering, editing and mastering recommended the Yamaha HS5's and the HS8 Subwoofer, and I've heard good things about the Audioengine D1.

is this investment worth it to you? Or would you rather go with something like the Corsair CA-SP211NA or the Logitech

Z623 980-000402???

Like many on this site, I have the Audioengine A5+ connected to my Essence STX and the combo is amazing. The stereo imaging is so good sometimes it freaks me out. They can get absurdly loud with no perceivable distortion and with some messing with EQ you can get a real 'bassy' sound if you want to but generally they are very punchy and never muddy. They also have the S8 subwoofer which you can buy separately. Just note they are not monitors, they have a slightly V-shaped eq. 10/10 would buy again.

The Yamaha's your friend recommended you are a better investment than shite gaming peripherals. The Audioengine D1 might not be necessary (nor any DAC), but that depends on how good/bad you motherboard's onboard audio is.

The technology use in audio creation or reproduction is advancing but unlike a computer where 5-8 years down the line you may have parts that are incompatible with modern technologies speakers and quality audio equipment do not go obsolete. (Typically, and I realize this comparison is a little flawed.) I would always advocate for getting something of higher quality if it is still in your budget. Unless you catch the audio upgradinitis bug you won't be replacing them as soon and they will perform more consistently. (You might even save some money in the long run, who knows!)

Why not this DAC? What would you recommend?

Don't get one? You're not recording so an audio interface will just be wasted on you, and modern motherboards have decent sound already.  Simply ghetto-rigging a studio monitor with 3.5mm to RCA cables is enough.
