Do I need a good GPU?

Taidi

Hey Guys,

i want to buy me a new GPU and i'm not really sure if i need a good one.

I'm not much of a gamer, sometimes i play games.

Mainly i edit Video or do some 3D Animation.

The Programs i use are After Effects, Premiere, Cinema 4D and Photoshop.

So are those Programs require a good GPU or can i grab a low-end one.

Tim

My PC specs: Intel Core i7-920, Gigabyte EX-58 Extreme, 9GB Corsair XMS3, Gigabyte GTX 670 Windforce, 1TB WD, Be Quiet Straight Power 10 500W

You don't have to get high end card, but not entry card so I suggest you get mid range card.

you can use cuda cores to accelerate most of the adobe photoshop stuff, you could look for a used gtx 660 ti as that will be cheap and powerful for you

some programs can use them to render/edit faster. i think a 280x will be just fine for what you want to do in games. just don't cheap out on your cpu too.

cuda cores are a type of processor, like your intel processor does most of your work with programs, kernel, operating system etc. cuda cores are used for massive matrix maths (thats what photoshop does, as an image is a large array usually of the order of 1920*1080*3 aka your usual hd size frame and a depth of 3 due to rgb(red, green and blue). All this gpu will do is process the images quicker for you, or if you do do abit of gaming itll give you a larger frame rate. the gtx 660 ti that I recommended is a few years old but is extremely good especially that your mainly using it for image processing.

I would not recommend the r9 280x from amd as it wont help you at all with image processing as nearly all video editing software doesnt support amd's stream cores. for your purpose go with Nvidia.

hope it helped.

Thanks, helped me a lot! I think i go with the 660

I got the system for free, because they replaced the computers in my dad's office :D but it has a passive cooled GPU and thats not good for me. It's runs at 90 degree celsius when i render a video :/

Well look around and see if you can get something cheaper and better in your area, but I suspect the gtx 660 ti will most likely be it but there some times is crazy people that sell off things very cheap as I got a gtx 460 for free :-)

Thats a deadly system even without it being free, you should be crazy happy with it

Another Question: How much GDDR5 do i need? is 1 gb fine, or should i go with 2 or more?

For your purpose with video editing and all, you should be just fine with 1GB (as far as I know, video editing doesn't use nearly as much VRAM as gaming)

CASE: Phanteks Enthoo Pro // CPU: Intel Core i5 2500K @4.2GHz // GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 Reference // RAM: 16GB Crucial Ballistix Sport @1333MHz // MOBOASUS P8Z77-V LK // SPACE: 240GB Crucial M500 SSD ~ WD Black 1TB // PSU: Corsair CX750M //

CASE: Cooler Master Elite 130 // CPU: Intel Pentium G3258 @4.0GHz // GPU: N/A // RAM: 8GB Crucial Ballistix Sport @1600MHz // MOBOEVGA Z87 Stinger Mini-ITX // SPACE: OCZ ARC 100 120GB SSD ~ [2X WD Black 2TB in RAID 1] // PSU: EVGA 430W //

Maybe a Quadro would be a good choice, but my budget is around 100-200 so i think a GTX is the better way to go?

A quadro wont do you much better as they are based on the same chips, its just a binning thing, as quadros use less power and thus lower temps, and are meant to be used for years. just go with the gtx and you will be fine, and as Uphorics said GB is perfectly fine =for what you are doing
