Back to the topic.

As an android user whose contract will end in December, I am currently indecisive about what phone I want. While I am tempted by the next Google Nexus offering, I am unsure of whether it would cater to my will for a larger phone which just so happens to be why I currently use a Note 3. There's also the matter of whether I actually need half of the features on Android. I rooted my Note 3 a month ago and all I've done is stop apps from autostarting... That's it in terms of significance. I'm never going to run homebrew ROMs or do anything like that.

However, I do take issue with iOS being so "closed". But that in itself can be repaired through jailbreaking which would give an iOS device at least similar functionality to android. Another issue I have is with the repetitiveness of Apple's iPhone designs - They all look the same except maybe the next model might be a little slimmer.

Another problem I have with iPhones are their inability to use storage mediums such as my wonderful Corsair Voyager Go or an SD card. But I have never actually needed to use an SD card for anything really. Although I have used my Corsair Voyager Go to watch movies and Game of Thrones on my Note 3 which is a delightful viewing experience due to the display size.

Therein lies another issue, I like large phones. I find them easier to hold in the hand and they are so much better for reading and browsing as such. They are borderline miraculous when it comes to YouTube videos as well. I couldn't imagine myself watching a movie or the latest episodes of LinusTechTips or Kickstarter Crap with such a small screen.

However, the issue with Android is that I have to be more careful with my freedom. If you aren't careful, you might accidentally ruin your phone. For example, I no longer have my warranty on my Note 3 and I have done so, so little with the rooting that it becomes a waste. Android devices can also be more powerful, but what can I, the consumer, do with so much power? I don't really play many mobile games or do anything advanced beyond basic social media interactions, taking photos, filming  and playing piano tiles.

I don't need something as advanced as Android to do this with. While price is not an issue for someone such as myself, what is also an issue is my ego. I have torn Apple products apart (figuratively) for being weak and overpriced, being seen with an iPhone would make me look like a hypocrite.

What should I do guys? Did you switch to iOS or Android?

Thanks

You've come to the wrong neighborhood for that shit.

But for serious, as an android user I'm debating switching to an iPhone on my next upgrade. I want my shit to actually work when I need it to - my apps on my Moto X like to crash sometimes or just not work properly.

Iphones have superb build quality and ease of use software, most android phones however do not they are plastic. android phones are also complex and full of customization, if you want all metal design i would wait for the Samsung galaxy s6 release as it will most likely be all metal judging buy there recent phones (GALAXY Alpha, A3 , A5 , Note 4)

Contract ending in December... Will be plenty of new flagships at that point. Get the next Nexus, the Nexus 6, 1+2 (or whatever it will be called).

Just because you can do tons of shit with android doesn't mean you need to. Load a different launcher when you wanna change things up, no need to go warranty voided with root and stuff.

Ah. exact same boat here.

my step dad and best friend have the Note 4, my mom has the s5.

my dad and step mom both have the iphone 6+.

me being me, I always like to point out on how on paper, my s4 is better then the iphone he has. but in reality, besides me being used to a back button, his iphone is much easier to use, its actually smooth, and a pleasnt experience. Right now, every android device no matter how powerful still hiccups and freezes up at times. it hangs, and just doesnt feel like the experience that 700$ should get you. You dont have that problem on IOS. as a guy that has had a rooted phone since the day he got it, Im honestly considering switching to IOS.

only phone that might keep me over right now is the lg g flex 2. I want to keep android, because thats just what I had you know? Guess its my ego to.

I remember getting the s3 when it first came out. everyone thought it was a tablet. no one knew about it. now half the school has androids. androids are "cool" but who cares. I want to tinker with my pc, my phone just needs to work.

I guess thats the biggest reason for me. If my computer crashes, or something goes wrong, in all reality its not a huge deal. but now, If my phone just stops, and is out of commission for a few days, that can lead to serious issues. so for my phone, i want it to "just work" and thats why there is a apple premium. because yeah there products are not perfect, but literally no phone is.

that and the iphone 6 has a bad ass camera that puts any camera on a phone I seen to shame

Yeah; a phone is not my PC. I don't need a phone with so many options when I have my PC for anything more "advanced". Most of my school for some reason specifically owns the iPhone 4S (Weird seeing as it was weaker than the S2 on launch). A fair part of my family are users of Apple products. My mom owns a macbook air and an iPhone 5C, my dad owns a macbook pro for work and an iPad Mini. Before he got his Note 3, he had an iPhone 4. The "family computer" just so happens to be a 2011 iMac. Their devices integrate, but an iOS device would not integrate with my PC like it would integrate with a Mac OS X system, but I presume I don't actually require them to be integrated.

I also do agree with another one of your points, £32.50 a month for a less user friendly experience and an infinite amount of micromanagement that you have to do is not really pleasant.

The main question is "how would I repair my ego" at this point?

What about Windows Phone?

I don't like Windows Phone. So little apps, only one mainstream manufacturer that I know of (Nokia), an uninteresting interface and honestly, I don't like the smart tiles on a smartphone or the fact that nobody uses Windows Phone.

OP, its hard for me to recommend the current iPhones, but I think with a software update they could potentially get better. I use iOS and Android(iPhone 6 and GS3 are my daily drivers) and while using both of the phones I find the iPhone more limiting for some very simple things. I don't root or ROM so that's not what I am talking about, but simple stuff like setting default apps or setting mobile data limits is non existent on iOS. There are also things like NFC that are restricted for no good reason, I guess with most people considering it worthless its not too much of a loss, but I am one of the few people that actually uses NFC, so for me I wish I could use it for more than payments. Hardware wise though the iPhone is a great device. Its solid and has a high quality feel, its just that I wish Apple would have changed two things: The protruding camera lens and added a larger battery. The camera lens hasn't been too much of an issue, but I have scratched mine and the aluminum ring around it has taken quite a beating. The battery on the iPhone 6 is pretty much a joke, being on par with my Galaxy S3 which really isn't much of an achievement. Luckily the iPhone 6 plus doesn't have this problem, but iOS isn't ready for the 6 plus either. The iPhone 6 plus is pretty much "just a larger iPhone", so the experience isn't quite optimized for the larger screen(if you use two hands for everything it shouldn't be much of an issue).

I guess for me I just like that I can customize my homescreen to my liking on Android, being able to optimize the experience for me(as in, choosing default apps), and just not being limited in any way(not needing iTunes for everything, file explorer, not needing a whole system update to get new features, etc.).

But for serious, as an android user I'm debating switching to an iPhone on my next upgrade. I want my shit to actually work when I need it to - my apps on my Moto X like to crash sometimes or just not work properly.

I'm going to be brutally honest, iOS 8 is the least stable version of iOS I have ever used(been using iOS since 3.1.3). Its not a crashy laggy mess like I have used with some Android versions, but as it stands today iOS and Android are about equal when it comes to stability(at least from my experience, but there were some graphs posted here the other day that confirm my findings). I wouldn't get an iPhone now if you wan't to solve your apps crashing issue(because it won't solve your issues lol), but I would wait for updates on both your Moto X and iOS to see which one can get fixed first.

that your a techie, which means that you take whatever is the best.

like when the xbox 360 came out, no pc could touch it for the price. so hell yeah get a concole. today? 350 its debatable. I recommened a xbox to a friend, because with a newegg deal, he got a bunch of crap, and it came with a 40$ gift card, that I took off him. so the system cost was 310$. no pc can touch that.

but for 500$ when it came out? pc all the way. see? it all depends.

buy a android tablet to make up for it. or go for the 6+ for all those that say the phones are to big

Lol, although the nice thing about Android is that you don't need a whole system update to get fixes or new features. Depending on the apps that are crashing, you might see future updates fix the issues(from the play store or whatever), or smaller OTA updates that I know Verizon likes to roll out(they actually did make my GN2 better).

Yeah, I'm buying a Kindle Fire HDX9 in the summer. I don't like consoles because they don't do much apart from play overpriced games with fuckloads of DLC and blu-ray movies. Also, consoles are more expensive in the long term.

This scenario is not one I feel is directly comparable to the smartphone wars where I now feel is a matter of functionality.

I can comprehend your appreciation of not needing iTunes for your phone to work, but that is the only hurdle you need to jump over for everything in your iOS "internet of things" to become integrated. Also, nothing was as bad as the initial release of iOS 6 where you lost google's services and ended up with horribly broken Apple versions.

Exactly. If I want an in-depth and customisable experience, I have my PC. My phone should not essentially have to be a secondary PC. I don't need everything to be complex to a certain degree, because that isn't convenient.

A system restore (or whatever it's called on mobile) might be useful since I didn't have this many issues when I first got the phone: Netflix's audio is always out of sync with video, Spotify likes to troll me with buttons not working or crash altogether, some apps won't even open sometimes, etc.

Another point to be made here is whether it is worth about £300 for the worse build quality when I can spend a bit more and get immense convenience and better build quality and materials.
