Why were they so finicky about selling? was it to manage production better?

It was a great marketing tool, it garnered interest in the "exclusive" phone. Invites only last 24 hours once redeemed (and only last a little while from when they are sent by OP), so you're kind of forced into making a rapid decision, probably helping sales.

Also, I think they might have been loss-making on the hardware and just trying to build a profile before launching a profitable phone.

Man when you outline it like that it really is quite a good tactic.

I think it worked out for them anyhow.

Thanks for the response!

Initially, they weren't selling the phones at a loss but at cost. Since launch, margins have grown a bit since the cost of hardware has dropped (801 is old news by now) but they still work with very tight margins (I've read single figure somewhere). They make up for it with an increase margin on accessories.

The invite system was to make sure that each produced phone was sold as to minimize inventory costs while they were scaling up the production.

I guess it helped with the publicity too by creating the illusion of scarcity.

completed the answer :)
