"The Maw" A Livestreaming Monster.

Beeeyeee

Hello! This is my build plan so far. It's going to be upgradable for future expansion. Going for a white with Orange LED's color scheme. I'll be running dual monitors as well.

The WD green drives will run in RAID 1 to store my recordings, videos, and other every-day files.
One Intel 530 series 120gb SSD for OS and Apllications.
One WD black 2 TB drive for running games

I'm considering getting the following instead of the Black drive.
Two Intel 530 series 240gb SSD's in RAID 0 for OS, apps, and most games

Any recomendations? Or opinions? Should I upgrade the 530's to 730's? I want this to be a beast for a long time coming. While also keeping it relatively low priced.

Do not run WD Green in a RAID array. Use WD Red, they are designed for that type of work.

Get a 1TB ssd, Samsung and Crucial make reasonably priced units. Use it for o/s, apps, and most games. (The bulk of this type of work involves relatively low amounts of random reads & writes, single larger ssd can perform as well or better than a RAID 0 array in this situation.)

Hi there @Beeeyeee!

This storage configuration looks pretty solid!

I would only change the RAID drives from WD Green to WD Red because they are designed for RAID and NAS environments and has the specific build-in features for such usage (like low operating temperature, TLER, NASware 3.0 etc.). You can check them out here:

Cheers! :)

I wouldnt run the SSD in a raid, get a sumsung EVO 850 or Crucial 500gb or 1tb. And for the raid 1 get WD reds as they are designed for that!

Other wise its perfectly fine!

Otherwise, I was going to use green drives because the 3TB have the cheapest $/GB and High capacity SSD's are quite expensive. do you think it would be worth it?

I would love to get a 1tb SSD but the fact is, one of those costs more than my budget for my entire storage. I've got about $240 on WD Red's now, but I'm wondering whether I should get like a 80GB SSD for OS and apps, and a 250ish GB SSD for games, and a WD black 2TB or something, and just copy them to the SSD when I wanted to play them. I want to spend like ~$500 on storage for this build.

I basically want my  OS and apps on an SSD. I want my dual 3TB HDD in RAID 1 for crucial storage. and for my games I would Like an SSD but they're too expensive and not big enough to store all my games. should I get two other HDD in RAID 0 for games? what would you recommend?

you should consider adding more ram since you are using it for live streaming, and are you planning to buy a web camera too? :)

happy streaming,

on seconds thought's if u play triple A titles u might need the extra ram :)

I have 16Gb of ram, I thought that was fine? 2Gb for OS, 8GB for games, and 6Gb for recording and other things. But yes I have a Logitech c120 and a Blue Yeti:)

Buy a single ssd. Buying multiple small units is not cost effective. You will end up replacing them in short order.

I would suggest less expensive memory. Equal or better quality. Better performance. Not that this will make a noticeable difference in gaming. But it does represent a cost saving.

RAID 1 is not backup and does not replace the need for keeping good, frequent backups.

Assigning budgets to major parts makes it difficult to optimize a new build. Based on previous posts it looks like the total budget is around $2,100.

Thanks! I appreciate everyone's help! my only problem with your build here, is that my games, apps, and OS will not be able to fit into 500GB, and I can't afford anything bigger. would you reccomend maybe just a 2TB WD Blue 7200?

You could go with a 256GB ssd and 1TB hdd.

Another option would be not to use a RAID 1 array for media storage.
