DVI vs HDMI

Go to solution Solved by Prastupok,

Is there a big difference between DVI and HDMI? I currently just use DVI on my pc but was debating about switching over to HDMI. :)

That article kinda outlines them.

HDMI carries both video and audio. DVI only carries video, but no audio. HDMI also requires a license fee. DVI is free. The successor for DVI is Display Port. Same as HDMI, that is carries both video and audio, but does not require a license fee, so it's free just like DVI.

HDMI is a much newer standard to DVI, pin-for-pin they are identical, but, DVI in my opinion is much better since it has a "locking" connector (screws) and compared to older spec HDMI support higher resolutions. With the new spec HDMI this is not an issue. It you are considering switching connectors, consider DisplayPort as it can be easily converted and has the locking connect plus many other features that HDMI doesn't support.

Single-link DVI and HDMI are identical signals. There is no difference besides from the fact that HDMI also carries audio, which is why adapters for DVI to HDMI and vice versa are so cheap and easily found, because it's just a passive pin-to-pin connection. Dual-link DVI is better then HDMI 1.x but worse then HDMI 2.0

Single Link DVI = HDMI 1.x < Dual-link DVI < HDMI 2.0
