The iWatch wasn't enough for execs... so turn to what everyone else is doing? SURE!

apple-iphone-vr-headset-patent.jpg

It seems to be some sort of Gear VR headset, or something like cardboard.

"...it's clearer than ever that Cupertino has been intrigued for years. The USPTO has granted Apple a patent (originally filed way back in 2008) for a headset design that uses your iPhone as a virtual reality display. The basic concept bears more than a small resemblance to Samsung's Gear VR. You slot your phone into a cradle that sits in front of your eyes, and an external controller (in this case, a remote) helps you navigate when motion tracking isn't enough."

Sigh... Oh, Apple. Lets get one product at a time. And new innovation, PLEASE.

The actual patent info is even more of the same:

"BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

This invention is directed to a head-mounted device constructed to receive a portable electronic device having a screen.

Using head-mounted devices, a user may view media provided by a portable electronic device. For example, a user may couple a personal electronic device, such as the iPod.TM. available from Apple Inc. of Cupertino, Calif., or the iPhone.TM. also available from Apple Inc. of Cupertino, Calif., to the head-mounted device via a cable or wire. Such a configuration can allow the user to view media on a private display, while the media is provided by a personal handheld device.

Sometimes, however, a wired connection may be inconvenient and cumbersome for the user in certain situations (e.g., the user must separately hold multiple devices and deal with cables).

In addition to being unwieldy, the coupled system often utilizes redundant features, which are not necessary when using the devices together. By way of example, each device utilizes a display screen, which adds cost, size, weight, and complexity to the entire system.

Accordingly, there is a need for an improved head-mounted display system, particularly a system that temporarily integrates or merges both mechanically and electronically a head-mounted device with a portable electronic device. "

Lmao, this is an exact copy of the cardboard "VR" box that Google had at Google I/O 2014, I hope that Google sues them. Google made this for mobile devices, and it was made out of cardboard, not even a year later (I think) Apple is copying them. almost exactly, this is just laughable.

This is the proof steve jobs kept the product focus tight if this becomes true, apple is a good company with mostly high quality hardware, but if they lose focus they start producing everythig and kill themselves, this along the rumors of a 12 inch ipad and other shizzle junk makes me sad.

Come on apple get your focus back, you did so well.

May the light have your back and your ISO low.

this is just a vague patent that they will use to sue people with

Too bad google already has a patent they could (possibly) sue apple with.

When something, especially a screen, is too close to my eyes and I try to focus on it without making it look like blurry diarrhoea, I get a headache. I have no idea how slapping your phone to a pair of 90's sized goggles are gonna make that "VR feel" any different.

That's what google took care of with their "VR" cardboard product, it had lenses on it that created a far away look, of sorts, an interesting idea, that apple is infringing on.

Edit- and is probably going to fail, because all that it looks like in the patent is, just glasses, very, very close to the face, and no spacing between the user's eyes and device, not allowed for any real use of the device, this is why I smh at Apple.

Does Google have a VR patent? I'm sure Samsung has at least filed, but I'm not positive Google has one.

Not quite sure, I never checked, really. But they released it, and they have made apps for it, it was at Google I/O last year, and I'm not positive, but I think you may be able to get them somehow, so I assume they would have a patent?

Patents is going out of hand right now lol. Apple won a case because of the shape circle. It was their Ideal of the Circle.
