AFAIK Broadwell uses Z97.

Edit: I just found out, thanks to wikipedia, that Broadwell works on 2011-3 and 1150. So X99, H97 and Z97 are supported.

does it work on z87 too or only the newer 9x boards? msi z87-g43 to be specific

It could probably work with BIOS update (just like it was for Haswell refresh), but I don't think any manufacturers would do that, because they want you to buy a new motherboard.

Would there be any point in upgrading to broadwell or should I just wait till skylake come's out.

I'm not sure. I don't know how much better Skylake will perform and I also don't know when Skylake will come out.

But you'll definitly need a new motherboard for Skylake as it uses LGA 1151.

I don't even know if its not better to stick with a i7-5820k instead and overclock it.
