Basically this thread is a copy and paste from the same thread on a different forum. I would just like the opinions of all you guys and gals.

The video above is NOT virtual reality gaming, but augmented reality gaming. There is a difference. Anyways, virtual reality gaming. It's coming...sooner or later. We all want it.

Things like the Oculus Rift in collaboration with the Virtuix Omni and Kinect are making HUGE leaps forward towards what I would like to call real virtual gaming.

By "real virtual reality gaming" I mean something like Sword Art Online (don't worry, I found an English version just for you guys). This is the kind of product that I'm really waiting for, and I'll definitely be getting one if such a thing were to come out.

So with great strides towards real virtual reality gaming from Oculus Rift/Omni/Kinect and from the first video shown, how long do you guys think it will take for us to invent real virtual reality gaming?

If I had the money to afford an Omni and an Oculus, I'd buy that without a second thought.

I have the room and I don't care if I look weird playing games, but exploration games and games like Demon's Souls would be soooooooooooooooooOOOOOOOOOOO awesome.

I think it will take 20 years to get to Sword Art Online level stuff. I've always wanted to make a computer that could read thoughts and convert them to data on a 1:1 ratio simply to put my ideas and imagination on "paper" so to speak as I fail as an artist. I have the imagination, but not the ability to take that and "make it real".

I can see how something like that would be needed for SAO.

see the issue is that people think they want virtual reality like occulus rift, they actually want something like what they have in sword art online or something more obtainable like accel world.

Exactly, but we have to take these steps first before trying the crazier stuff like that. Because if something like the NerveGear from SAO was invented, it would have to be literally perfect, or else something like that could cause brain damage or potentially death.

I think occulus rift and google glass are the first steps.

Yes, and that brings up an important issue.

Exactly. We can't let what happened in SAO to actually happen. That'd be horrible.

If any of you have read the Pendragon Adventure series of books, in one of the worlds they discover, the people there have invented such a thing as what is in SAO.

They've also developed ways to make it so that they can stay in it indefinitely via foods that can be consumed through the skin and operators to manage the systems in the world (not AI, but other humans).

The problem is that just about the entire population of this world is indefinitely within the Virtual Reality construct and the real world is deteriorating because of it. Cities are ghost towns, power plants are automated, etc etc.

Part of Pendragon's mission is to save this world from self-destruction. I won't spoil anything from the story, but I fear this as reality with our own world if we do develop SAO level games and make them relatively cheaply available.

It's sort of a different form of Technological destruction. Where in the Terminator and the Matrix the machines actively kill us for being "inferior". Whereas in this story, we are slowly killing ourselves by simply forsaking our own world for a fictional but "perfect" one. Succumbing to machines in a different, less malicious, but still detrimental, way.

I say perfect because it's perfect to each person's individual tastes as it can be tailored to them individually.

Well, they did, but they were originally exterminating us.

*SPOILER*

We blacked out the skies in an attempt to cut them off from Solar energy and that's what created the need for them to use us as batteries. Animatrix. Watch it. :)

I believe it is. It's basically 9 short films packed into one.

It's quite graphic (gore). Pretty awesome, but one of the (15minute) sections is over the process going from AI to Machines VS Humans. Kind of a documentary style thing without witnesses, animated.

I enjoyed it.
