So yes, here is that one scenario where the 3.5GB is an issue. I launch the game and it immediatly shoots up to 3.6GB (1080p) and causes the frametimes to be all over the palce (only in the hangar though).

Is there a way I can tell the engine to limit vram usage to 3GB?

Thanks in advance,

maj.

Googling netted one topic on RSI, but that post is chucked full of shitposting.

There has to be some way to tell the CryEngine to stop at 3GB?

I dont think there is... VRAM allocation is governed by the driver. Im sure once the game is out it'll work better.

I think you'll find the stuttering is just the state of the game (its noticeable but it shouldn't be really bad either), my frame times are similar whether I'm above or below the 3584MB mark, the only time they are decently stable is when the items in view are fairly consistent. Basically the hangar with a few ships in it is a system hog ATM, there's just so much geometry etc. in there.

You wont be able to limit VRAM use because if you did you would just end up missing textures etc. if it didn't completely bomb out or it would go to system RAM which would make things unplayable, further down the track they might have more compressed versions of the textures available but I think its a combination of everything not just textures, there's not much scaling in the options ATM.

Note crossing the 3584MB mark doesn't always mean stuttering either, it seems to depend on the engine e.g. FC4 and BF4 seem to stay smooth while Advanced Warfare will stutter even though BF4 statistically shows more frame variance than COD:AW relative to GTX980's (that's in SLI because on a single card you don't get playable frame rates).
