Kernel driver crash

Hi there, I am running a gtx 590 (stock multipliers) with an i5 4670k (stock for now) with a 700w psu on windows 8.1 pro. Every now and then maybe once every 48 hours or so my display goes black when opening a new application (spotify is particularly bad for this). The display stays black for a second then turns back on as the gpu driver recovers (I get the kernel driver crashed error message in my note centre). Anybody know the cause of this? and even better, a fix? my drivers are up to date. thanks.
