sooo i got an intel i7 920 and this summer i am thinking about upgrading my pc in terms of cpu gpu (and motherboard obviously). But as i was reading reviews

benchmarks and stuff i realized that actually my 920 with a good overclocking can be better or the same as 4th generation i5 or i7.

Even though i am still not sure about how legit that is but still a 10 or at max 20 frames difference that i noticed in some reviews from the i7490k per se when you get 100 or 80 frames is not noticeable.

Soooo back to the point should i stay in x58 overclock and get a nice 970gtx or go for a new i7 4xxx/i5 4690k and double my budget.

ps : my motherboard is a gigabyte udr 3  bad for extreme stuff  or no?

ps2: i play at 1680x1050 and i wont upgrade to an 1080p or more in the distant future

If you don't notice any slow downs with the games you play, just run what you have.
While you may be able to match the speed in GHZ, there are other factors at play that will matter when we talk about the true processing power of the chip.

So, even though they can be clocked the same, newer ones will be faster. That said, it's an i7, so you'll likely be fine.

If you haven't noticed slowdowns, don't bother "upgrading". Just use what you have until we see what Nvidia does with it's next series of GPU's.

If for some reason they do push hard for NVLink on the consumer side, then it might be more interesting.

Skylake is also something worth waiting for, as well as the price drop of DDR4.

i know the differences between the new and old generation but moore's law isnt actually working the past 4 5 years so the performance hasnt increased more than 10% thats why i refer to overclocking :D . what i failed to say is that when i play games there is a sudden drop of frames when i move the camera fast but i dont know if the data processing bottleneck is cause by the cpu or the gpu (games like watch dogs bf 4 or moded skyrim) my gpu is 660ti btw .So if i go for an 970 or a future nvidia card will i still have that stuttering ?

Download something like FRAPS or another program that measures CPU and GPU load.

If your CPU is hitting 100% usage, that's your bottleneck. If it's the GPU hitting 100%, that's your bottleneck. Pretty simple ;)
