Hey. Is it possible to deactivate windows from a dead hard drive and then activate it on the working drive. The other night i was helping a friend build a PC and as soon as we installed windows 8 on it and did a restart he decided it was a good time to switch wires around on the PSU and long story short the hard drive emitted some pretty smoke and the drive is dead. Windows hadn't been activated for more than half an hour. Can he get his windows key back and reactivate it on the new hard drive? Who would we talk to about that?

I have called Microsoft about that. The old installation does not has to be deactivated.  Just enter your key on your new drive and you are good to go.
