No. I suggest you read up on how RAM works.

That isn't correct. You can put 2 dimms of 4GB 1066 memory and 4GB of 2400 memory and it will work. It just operates at the lower speed.

 

But matching one dimm of 4gb and 2 dimms of 2gb won't work,

Even if it's the same frequency. It will not work. It doesn't have to do with the capacity. It is the number of DIMMS needed. The motherboard will be looking for a matching pair for both.

It isn't that you can't use different capacities ever, but they have to be done properly.

the 8 gig stick goes in one channel

 

The other sticks need to be in the separate channel.

An example

The 8 gig stick would go in one of the red DIMM slots, and the 2x2 sticks would go in the black slots.

I actually have mixed ram right now, 2x4gb of Adata 1600 and 2x4gb of kingston hyperX fury 1866, both sets running at 1600
