I game at 1080p on a 60hz monitor and i want a card that will game for the next 3 years, i dont mind turning down graphics as it becomes nessacary and i dont want to waste money on a card please help

I agree with @Jaybird but you could also look at the 280x or greater. A budget would be good as well. Keep in mind however that it is impossible to predict what the games of the future will require in terms of graphics horsepower, or from other computer components.

I heard that 290 got a small price drop ever since the gtx 970s ram issue and if you are not bothered taking a risk you could probably find a second handed 290 for a cheap price.

I just got a R9 290 last week for 150 brand new and the guy had more of them. I may get another one and run them in Crossfire. One thing these 290 can be loud and  can require more power though. Here is a benchmark i just did after OCing my 290 a bit tonight. http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/5859596  For $150 I am happy with these results.

Is the 280x not more future proof than the 285 cause of the extra vram though
