So the question is

A: Add up all the numbers in the sequence 1,4,7,10,13,16.....1000.

The answer is 167167, I can do this.

Now onto part B where I am stuck.

B: Every third term is removed from the sequence (e.g. 7,16 etc.) find the sum of the new sequence

The answer from the back of the book is:

111445

How do you do it?

7 16.. Is its own sequence (think it goes up in 9s?).

If you can find the sum of the first sequence, find the sum of this and subtract.

Ah I think you're right, thanks!

I missed the freaking lesson you scrub

Since you want the sum of the sequence without the 3rd number, you would take original sum-(sum of the every 3rd number sequence)

  • The Arithmetic Sequence of every 3rd number is 7, 16, 25, 34, by 9, so the last number for every 3rd number would be 997. (111 3rd numbers)
  •
  • The sum of this sequence is [(First Number+Last Number)/2]*Number of Numbers
  •
  • (7+997)/2=502---> 502*111=111455
  •

Thanks man!

What do you mean in the first two questions by "Space"?

It seems impossible until it's done.

Come on man. That's easy...

And I thought our American public education system was poor!

Not if the kid missed the lesson on it...

You also have to take into account that some people may struggle more than others ( not saying this is the case here, just saying it can happen )

It seems impossible until it's done.
