I am attempting to convince a friend that the R9 280x is better than either the GTX 760 or the GTX 960.

What do you guys think is the best GPU for under $250?

The rig will have:

I7 4790k @4.0 GHz

16 GB RAM

Primarily for gaming, some rendering and video editing.

GTX 760 master race reporting in here.

I don't want to know what you are using, I want to know what you think is best.

The game we are using as a reference point (also the highest requirement game currently being played) is PlanetSide 2 at ultra graphics.

I don't play Planetside 2 but I get 85-120 fps in BF4 on Ultra preset.

GTX 760 because the 960's tiny 128bit bus.

(a little biased though.)  :D

But the R9 280x has a 384 bit bus, and other cards have larger bus sizes as well.

I am not just talking about the 760 and 960.

See the thing is that you're looking only at gaming benchmarks. I'm looking to use CUDA for GPU Acceleration in the majority of my production software.

How many times have I said this?

Can somebody please define the term "GPU Acceleration".

you've only said it once because this is your first post.

Also the 760 has more CUDA cores if you do any sort of CAD or video encoding.

It comes down to opinion tbh.

I'd guess you're the friend?

Yeah, try to get a GTX 770 used. Otherwise, the GTX 680/GTX 760 will do nicely. Quite obviously, you can't use CUDA on an AMD card.

I'm also guessing here that since he is the friend, he is speaking to OP.

Can somebody please define the term "GPU Acceleration".

In a nutshell, some applications such as Photoshop, After Affects and Premire support stuff such as rendering acceleration with the use of a GPU.

I've been talking to stardar over email about this topic and reminded him 5+ times that I do production shit, not just gaming. and then he decides to make a trhead

Is this specific to CUDA, or does this support Radeon cards as well?
